I don’t have any recommendations for that area but I have two good site recommendations that may help you find a great doctor.

The first one is at: http://www.RateMDs.com

The second is thru: http://www.acog.org (click on where it says “Find a Doctor” and it will then take you to the U.S. map)

Serious question, serious answers, please.

I am planning to stay sexually inactive for the rest of my life.

Will I be okay if I never go to the gynecologist?
I will remain sexually inactive. That is not the question. let me just get that one fact straight.

And I thought the reason for going to the gynecologist was for STD’s. So why would I need to go?

You could go through life without seing a gynecologist or other doctor for a vaginal exam, breast exam, and pap smear, but you’d be risking your health. Sexual activity is only one of many reasons for having these exams. You can develop problems in your female organs that are unrelated to sex. You do not have to have sex to develop cervical cancer or breast cancer. In addition, you can develop fibroids, uterine cancer, and ovarian cysts and cancer without regard to sexual activity.

Regular visits to the doctor will assure that you female organs are healthy and that, if a problem develops, it is caught and treated early. Please re-consider the idea of not going to the gynecologist. If you find tthe idea frightening or intimidating, you might want to find an understanding female physician to make the exam a little easier.

Absolutely. Having anything inside of your vagina can break your hymen…including a tampon. So if the doctor didn’t break it, something else might have.

Also out of curiousity,do they weigh you there? And what happens at the gynecologist.Like how does the checkup go? :S
Also, will your parent be with you through all of this? or just some of it? and it isn’t ur family physician that is doing this.right?

You generally don’t need to see a gynecologist until you are sexually active or over 18. And usually, your family doctor can handle most issues until then. The exam is not very painful or anything, but it may be if you still have your hymen. I just wouldn’t recommend getting checked out until there is a reason to (you turn 18, you have sex, or you are having issues that only a gynecologist can solve.)

okay my whole life i’ve always went to my pediatrician for everything. i’m 18 i’ll be going to a gynecologist soon. what can i expect? what is that the diff bw having to go to a gynecologist and just a regular physician?

If you are going for your first pap smear, it is uncomfortable but not painful. They will take your blood pressure and weigh you. Then they will ask you lots of questions about your health and when your last period was. Then they have you put on a paper gown and get ready for the doctor. When the doctor comes in he may ask some questions about your health. He will discreetly check your breasts for lumps. There will always be a nurse or lady in the room with you and if there isn’t and you want one, ask. Then they will put your feet in stirrups with your legs open and he will put two fingers into your vagina and push on your ovaries to check them. Then they will insert a speculum into your vagina and take a long q-tip and take a sample from your cervix. It doesn’t hurt but is a little uncomfortable. Sometimes they will put a gloved finger into your anus to check to see that everything is okay there. Then it is over.

During the procedure, the doctor will probably talk to you about your life or family and try to keep your mind off what he is doing. If you try hard to relax and take deep breaths, it is less uncomfortable.

Don’t be embarrassed, it is nothing compared to giving birth and being in labor, when it seems everyone is checking your vagina.

A gynecologist has studied women’s health with regard to the reproduction organs and does not treat patients for other things, where a regular physician treats patients for most everything unless they need a specialist in another field.

hope this helps..

Spironolactone is generally prescribed as an “off label” acne treatment for women. This drug, though intended to help people with heart problems not zit problems, reduces the production of the hormone androgen. Androgen promotes excess facial oil secretion.

Less oil secretion limits the possibility of having clogged pores and acne flare-ups.

Spironolactone works as an androgen receptor blocker. This drug decreases androgen production in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Side effects from spironolactone can include breast tenderness and menstrual irregularity.

For this reason, doctors usually add oral contraceptives like Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Estrostephave to compliment acne treatments and ease potential spironolactone side effects. Ironically though, spironolactone is recommended for women who are not candidates for oral contraceptives.

So should a woman over 35 with acne go with spironolactone? According to the American College of Physicians, the answer is “No”.

In the 2004 May/June edition of the American College of Physicians (ACP) published a medical review of studies that tested the effectiveness of spironolactone for controlling hirsutism, acne, or both in fertile or postmenopausal women. The ACP review found insufficient evidence to recommend spironolactone as an acne treatment.

Nevertheless, Dr. Diane Thiboutot of Pennsylvania State University, Hershey uses spironolactone for female patients with acne accompanied by a suspected endocrine disorder.

For example, when a woman experiences a sudden onset of severe acne or acne that is linked with excessive facial hair growth, irregular menstrual periods, increased libido, dark patches of skin, deepening of the voice, insulin resistance and hair loss, spironolactone may be helpful.

Dr. Thiboutot noted that spironolactone “seems to control quite well those cystic-type nodules that they [women] get on their lower face and chin.”

Yet Dr. Julie C Harper Dr. Harper of the department of dermatology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham doesn’t recommend spironolactone so easily. Only if neither topical retinoids nor antibiotics have not worked for a woman’s case of acne would Dr. Harper then suggest using spironolactone for women over 35.

Author of “Acne Messages”, Naweko San-Joyz, says “A woman’s response to androgens is so varied that limiting herself to an androgen blockers like spironolactone certainly does not guarantee a cure, or even a quick treatment.”

San-Joyz adds that overproduction of androgens is just one step in a series of potential events that could lead to acne. Instead of hormonal manipulation with drugs, San-Joyz suggests women with acne regulate this conditional using food, stress control and greater awareness of potential acne triggers like environmental estrogens.

Women with acne have numerous treatments options. If a woman does decide to go with spironolactone, it’s best to get her prescription filled with her gynecologist rather that her general practitioner.

It’s most likely that the gynecologist will be more aware of how a patient may respond to hormonal treatments like spironolactone and oral contraceptives, thus making recovery faster.
