What causes irregular periods in anorexic girls?
I am wondering about the biology behind it, please and thank you (:

Probably because they are too underweight to carry a baby. Weight gain, weight loss, stress, and illness can cause irregular periods.

The female body’s goal is to get pregnant and carry the baby to term. The body is programmed to know if it can carry a baby to term safely. To do so, the body must be of a certain weight, so it can sustain a new life for over 9 months. In underweight girls, the body thinks (correctly!) that it cannot sustain a baby. Therefore, the menstrual cycle stops, so even if the girl has intercourse, she will not become pregnant.

because of their unsteady weight. one day they’ll way 110 and then 2 weeks after 90 its too much for their menstrual system to keep up with and its a disgusting thing to be anerexic

you need to maintain a body fat percentage of at least 10-11% to stay fertile (ie get period) less body fat will not sustain new life.

Which is why I was so confused when Nicole Ritchie got pregnant the first time. I mean she was thinspiration for so many anas.

    Lack of energy.

Your body needs a certain amount of calories to maintain a regular cycle. The body cuts off unneeded organs when it doesn’t have enough energy; in this case, it basically shuts down your ovaries.

If you’ve got no calories or little to no body fat, your ovaries don’t function correctly. Sometimes they don’t function at all.

It’s because there is not enough fat stored in the body to regulate horomone level in the brain therefore your body reacts to a state of shock, and your brain systematically halts the menstrual cycle to repair other damages that you have done to yourself, if your anorexic of course. But girls who are underweight and still eat healthy can still get their periods and have children. I’m naturally slender at 5′6" and 105 and I still get my period. You just have to eat healthy. Plus its nice I can snack more than most people.

    Hope this helps :)
