How do doctors live while attending residency?
November 15th, 2009 | by admin |I want to become a doctor but I am confused about the residency. Do you get to choose where or what state you do your residency? How do doctors have a family while doing all this? Do most live in apartments while doing this? How does it work? Anything will help! Thank you!
You can choose where you want to do your residency, but a lot of people tend to do it in the state where they completed med school because it can be expensive to travel to interviews in other states. Doctors can have a family while doing their residency, but it can be difficult and usually requires help from a babysitter etc. My parents started a family during their residency, which was challenging, but they don’t regret it. They just didn’t have a lot of money. Some people live in apartments, but others rent houses, depending on the situation and how much they’re getting paid. Doctors usually make a lot less money during their residencies than they actually will once they have completed it.

While in med school, you interview for residencies. You then participate in the match process. YOu rank your choices and the residency rank theirs. Then some computer program spits out the match across the country. Husband and wifes or couple if both students can do a joint match. You get paid at a residency. It is resonable 40-60 thousand but the amount of hours you put in the hourly rate is low. Each state has it own laws as to how many hours you can work.
