How long are doctors allowed to take a break from practicing before they (if they do) face any consequences?

I actually would like to know this for dentists, but I figured similar principles would apply to medical doctors as well.

Is there a limit to one’s break before he or she has to reapply for a license again?

Thanks!

There is no limit. They can take a break for as long as they want, only that their license be current when they start back up again.
