Carcinogens in cleaning products – am I putting my family’s health at risk?
March 2nd, 2010 | by admin |I usually use Mr Muscle to wipe beside the sink after doing the dishes. The cups then go mouth-side down onto the place that I have just wiped. I use Mr Muscle/Dettol cleaner because it makes the sink cleaner and shinier.
Are products like this carcinogenic?
If so, can anyone suggest a non-harmful way (i.e. non-harmful products) of keeping things clean and shiny without risking my family’s health?
Are there any websites i can visit to find out more?
Veg Rose, i am not being fussy, just asking a question. I just want to know if what i am doing is wrong and if so, what can I do instead. I dont consider it fussy to look after my family’s health lol
Use lemon juice or vinegar. If you are really worried, write to the manufacturer and ask for a safety data sheet; under the CoSHH and the CHIP regulations, they must supply one if requested.

Always safer to rinse your things. Many cleaning products use surfactants that may not be carcinogenic but have similar effects as human hormones (Alkylphenol Ethoxylates), and long term high exposure may cause physiological changes, best avoided if pregnant.

In the U.S., a material safety data sheet can be gotten from the store that sells cleaning and other products. Go to service desk or manager and they will be glad to get it for you. It is the law. They or you may have to down load from m
manufacturer.
I also agree with rinsing. If the directions say to rinse, do it.

These products and the chemicals in them have been in use for generations without the slightest indication that they are carcinogenic.

Rinse the surface after you used Mr Muscle or get a draining tray, glasses shouldn’t be dried with the mouth-side covered, air needs to circulate and the lip should definitely not come in contance with any chemicals, cleaner or not cleaner.
I also have knowledge of people constant stomach troubles for years, only to find out the reason: they don’t rinse the plates well enough. Many a time I’ve seen people putting cookware, crockery and cuttlery to dry with suds still hanging on it. We don’t just have to use plenty of hot water and washing liquid, we have to RINSE well too.
