Can a gynecologist do a pregnancy test and prescribe contraceptive pill?
May 13th, 2010 | by admin |I have missed my period for a consecative three months but have done home pregnancy test and were negative. Also i am on the contraceptive pill i have booked an appointment with a gynecologist but amnot sure if a gynecologist even does a pregnency test or can prescrible contraceptive pill.. Can someone help me an tell me if a gynecologist is the best to see about this or would a GP Doctor be better.
Gynecologists specialize in that kind of stuff. That is the ideal doctor to see for your birth control needs and reproductive questions.

Yes a gynocologist can do a pregnancy test and prescribe the pill. He won’t give you the pill unless he is sure you aren’t pregnant. I would prefer to go to my gyno for this.

well why didn’t you ask them when you made the appointment?? They do pregnancy tests, the best way to know for sure is to do a blood test. you need to call the doctor’s office back and tell them what you want done and you think you may be pregnant but want to take a preg. test.

wow
that’s a large part of what they do
of course they have to do a physical exam (pap smear) first – this is very important and no one will give you the pill without one
a GP will not be able to do the gynecological exam – they can do the test but most likely won’t give you the pill (unless they are a bad dr)

Yes, a gynecologist is who you want to see. He/She will get you set up for a blood test. Seeing as this is the third month you’ve missed your period, you really should have stopped taking the pill immediately after you missed your period the first time and contacted the gynecologist then because if it turns out that you are pregnant, these last two months of birth control that you’ve been taking could be very harmful to your baby. If you’re not pregnant, he can write you a prescription for the pill. Good Luck!
