What to expect during my first gynecologist visit?

May 31st, 2010 | by admin |

okay my whole life i’ve always went to my pediatrician for everything. i’m 18 i’ll be going to a gynecologist soon. what can i expect? what is that the diff bw having to go to a gynecologist and just a regular physician?

If you are going for your first pap smear, it is uncomfortable but not painful. They will take your blood pressure and weigh you. Then they will ask you lots of questions about your health and when your last period was. Then they have you put on a paper gown and get ready for the doctor. When the doctor comes in he may ask some questions about your health. He will discreetly check your breasts for lumps. There will always be a nurse or lady in the room with you and if there isn’t and you want one, ask. Then they will put your feet in stirrups with your legs open and he will put two fingers into your vagina and push on your ovaries to check them. Then they will insert a speculum into your vagina and take a long q-tip and take a sample from your cervix. It doesn’t hurt but is a little uncomfortable. Sometimes they will put a gloved finger into your anus to check to see that everything is okay there. Then it is over.

During the procedure, the doctor will probably talk to you about your life or family and try to keep your mind off what he is doing. If you try hard to relax and take deep breaths, it is less uncomfortable.

Don’t be embarrassed, it is nothing compared to giving birth and being in labor, when it seems everyone is checking your vagina.

A gynecologist has studied women’s health with regard to the reproduction organs and does not treat patients for other things, where a regular physician treats patients for most everything unless they need a specialist in another field.

hope this helps..

There is a lot of difference. They will probably do an examination of your lower area which means they will have to look inside you with one of their instruments and they will probably take a swab too. It is uncomfortable, but it is a necessary evil to stay healthy. It only takes a few minutes once the doctor comes in. Just breathe and try to focus on something else. It helps me.

You will go in, fill out a ton of paperwork asking about family history, sexual history and you will need to write down how many partners you’ve had, when your last period was and any other concerns. Then you will be taken into an office and they will talk to you about any concerns you may have, like if you were interested in any birth control or if you were wondering about safe sex, they will ask if you have had unprotected sex, then they(your gyno) will leave the room and ask you to remove your pants and undies and get onto the examination table where there will be a paper sheet you cover up with, then your gyno will come back in and ask you to put your feet in stirrups and will have you move your booty to the end of the table. She/he will then have gloves on and enter a finger at the bottom of your vagina and then enter the speculum and open it up, it doesn’t hurt at all! And I didn’t feel it was awkward either.. Then they will swab your cervix and your done! They’ll check your pH levels(if u think you have a problem down there) and or check for other deseases under a microscope in another room, letting you time to put on your undies, and wipe down there with a feminine cloth cuz they enter the speculum with some lube. Anyways, I hope this helps! It’s exacly what happened at mine which I had for the first time 2 months ago.. =]
