What is the appropriate age for a girl to go see a gynecologist?

June 19th, 2010

My mom wants me to see a gynecologist for regular check ups and stuff.she wanted me to ask on here (she doesn’t know how this works.lol.) when is the appropriate age.Im currently 13 btw.

Also out of curiousity,do they weigh you there? And what happens at the gynecologist.Like how does the checkup go? :S
Also, will your parent be with you through all of this? or just some of it? and it isn’t ur family physician that is doing this.right?

You generally don’t need to see a gynecologist until you are sexually active or over 18. And usually, your family doctor can handle most issues until then. The exam is not very painful or anything, but it may be if you still have your hymen. I just wouldn’t recommend getting checked out until there is a reason to (you turn 18, you have sex, or you are having issues that only a gynecologist can solve.)

Should companies be allowed to use your family health records to determine your coverage and rates?

June 19th, 2010

I was reading recently that insurance companies are now using family history to calculate rates and even deny coverage where they can perceive a loss or bad investment. I believe most corporate employees are protected from such scrutiny and must be allowed to join group policies except where pre-existing conditions allow the insurance company to opt out. But, self-employed or employees of say a small private school may not he able to obtain reasonably priced coverage because their Mom’s dad had a heart attack, colon cancer, etc…

That is called underwriting, and is done. It is a good determination of future costs. I would assume the option would be to charge everyone the higher rates, so they are covered for the ones with health issues.

Of course merley tell them you are adopted and have no family history.

Can I get some information on witch doctors during the middle ages?

June 19th, 2010

I try searching about witch doctors, but all I seem to get is info about modern day witch doctors
I need to get some info on midieval witch doctors, so any info out there?

Links and/or info will be appreciated.

According to the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) the term "witch doctor" was first used in English in 1718, in a book by Francis Hutchinson. That’s good two centuries after the end of the middle ages.

It’s my feeling that if a word didn’t exist to describe something at a particular time, it’s because that something didn’t exist. You aren’t going to find references to rocket scientists in the middle ages either!

Charles Mackay wrote a book called "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" in 1841 which mentions witch doctors in England. It think it’s probable that the existence of witch doctors in England in the 18th and 19th centuries may have been something of a backlash against the more de-humanizing aspects of the Industrial Revolution.

**However***

It is possible that by "witch doctor" you may just mean "healer." If that’s the case, just use that word as your search term.

Bear in mind that the middle ages were 1000 years long and covered more than a dozens cultures. During that time there doctors, surgeons, midwives, alchemists, healers and (in some corners like Finland) shamans, any of which might be what you are actually looking for. Also try using the terms "physician" or "chiurgeon" (a medieval spelling of "surgeon"; often used generically for any doctor).

Also be careful of ahistorial bias. The methods of medieval chiurgeons might seem a little "hocus-pocus-y" to us (balancing humors, bloodletting, etc.), but they were based on what was understood (and widely accepted) about the human body at the time. Also, much of it was based on the writings of the Roman physician Galen, who’s writing remained the standard medical text for a millenium.

EDIT: I came across something else that might help you: the term "cunning folk". These men and women were part of the rural British and Welsh scene from the 16th to the 19th century. The term "witch doctor" could well apply to them. However, it should be noted that they didn’t claim they were curing physical ailments by magic; they claimed they were curing *magical ailments* – that is to say, if someone though they had been cursed, they went to a cunning man or cunning woman for a cure – to undo the curse.

It’s notable that they only arise after the Protestant Reformation in England. It is thought that they filled a niche in the popular psyche previously filled by Catholic priests who practiced both routine blessings and, when deemed necessary, exorcisms.

These "cunning folk" did not exist in the middle ages either. The 16th century is post-medieval.

What to expect during my first gynecologist visit?

May 31st, 2010

okay my whole life i’ve always went to my pediatrician for everything. i’m 18 i’ll be going to a gynecologist soon. what can i expect? what is that the diff bw having to go to a gynecologist and just a regular physician?

If you are going for your first pap smear, it is uncomfortable but not painful. They will take your blood pressure and weigh you. Then they will ask you lots of questions about your health and when your last period was. Then they have you put on a paper gown and get ready for the doctor. When the doctor comes in he may ask some questions about your health. He will discreetly check your breasts for lumps. There will always be a nurse or lady in the room with you and if there isn’t and you want one, ask. Then they will put your feet in stirrups with your legs open and he will put two fingers into your vagina and push on your ovaries to check them. Then they will insert a speculum into your vagina and take a long q-tip and take a sample from your cervix. It doesn’t hurt but is a little uncomfortable. Sometimes they will put a gloved finger into your anus to check to see that everything is okay there. Then it is over.

During the procedure, the doctor will probably talk to you about your life or family and try to keep your mind off what he is doing. If you try hard to relax and take deep breaths, it is less uncomfortable.

Don’t be embarrassed, it is nothing compared to giving birth and being in labor, when it seems everyone is checking your vagina.

A gynecologist has studied women’s health with regard to the reproduction organs and does not treat patients for other things, where a regular physician treats patients for most everything unless they need a specialist in another field.

hope this helps..

Where can I find the best family health insurance coverage for the right price?

May 31st, 2010

I am working for a small landscaping company that does not offer insurance. I am married with two kids, both under 2 yrs of age, and my wife has a pre-existing condition of asthma. Can someone help me find a good insurance coverage for a reasonable price and also accepts pre-existing conditions? Any idea on an average cost?

It’s hard to make a specific recommendation without knowing more about your situation, especially where you live. Health insurance rates and options vary widely from state to state. In most states, your wife could possibly be turned down for coverage due to her asthma, so that may be a challenge. You might find an insurance company that will cover her, but it’s possible they will approve coverage for yourself and your kids while declining coverage for her, or at least for all asthma-related services.

The best thing you can do is talk with a licensed agent who represents multiple health insurance companies in your area and who can offer you some frank personal advice. It doesn’t cost you anything extra to work through an agent. You can also check out your options online through an agency like eHealthInsurance.com, where I work. You can get free quotes from leading companies in your area, compare plans side by side, and apply for coverage online. If you want to talk with one of our licensed agents, give us a call at 1-800-977-8860.

If you find a plan that meets your needs and budget but your wife gets turned down for coverage due to her health history, you may have some other state-sponsored options, depending on where you live. In that eventuality, take a look at coverageforall.org. They offer free personal assistance and a state-by-state list of the different public options that are available for people who can’t afford or don’t qualify for coverage on their own.

Good luck!

How do doctors diagnose a urinary tract infection?

May 31st, 2010

I’ve researched that it’s a painful burning sensation. But for urinary tract infections, is the burning only when you pee, or does the burning occur constantly?

Also, at the doctors, how do they check for urinary tract infections? Do they actually check the vagina?

It is a burning feeling while you are urinating, and you feel like you need to go constantly. You simply go to the lab at your doctors office, give them a urine sample,{pee in a cup} and the technician will check it for bacteria. Depending on the type of bacteria, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic for you. When I get one, which is often, I don’t even see my doctor, he just calls in my prescription. Don’t be scared and good luck.

Can anyone give me advice on how to get a family health insurance plan?

May 13th, 2010

My husband is starting his own business and we will need to purchase an insurance policy for our family. When I started calling around, I am an automatic denial because I have Multiple Sclerosis. Does anyone have any advice as to how to find a policy to cover us? Thank you

Don’t get a discount plan…PERIOD. It’s not insurance and having an Amway type company responsible for your health care is ridiculous.

Find a broker that does business in your state as MS is going to need to go through a high risk pool.
